Hey folks! I recently had the opportunity to sit down with a copy of The Goonies: Escape With One-Eyed Willy's Rich Stuff*, which, for the purposes of this review and my own sanity I'll refer to simply as The Goonies! The Goonies is an escape room-style game for 1 or more players which follows the plot of the classic 80's adventure movie using the Coded Chronicles system. This will be a spoiler free review, though if you're familiar with the movie, you'll likely have a fair idea what to expect.
Ye Intruders Beware
The game begins by introducing you to the cast of familiar characters and the Fratellis, the villains you'll need to stay ahead of throughout your adventure. To progress through the story, each character will have a unique trait to help the group. In order to succeed, you'll need to work together and combine your talents. This aspect utilises the Goonies theme to great effect, as part of their journey was learning to cooperate to survive. One of the draw cards for a game like this is the open player count, no matter the size of your group, you can get everyone to the table and assign roles or tasks accordingly to ensure everyone can contribute. Collaborating on a puzzle is a rewarding process, though it can sometimes lead to frustration if people disagree on a course of action.
Goonies Never Say Die!
Players familiar with the movie will have somewhat of an advantage over those who have never seen it, to a degree where playing with a super-fan could be akin to playing on easy mode. If you have little to no knowledge of The Goonies, then this still makes for a solid adventure escape room game. The puzzles are fun and provide just enough of a challenge that you're unlikely to hit a wall and can no longer progress. There are consequences for making mistakes, but this only serves to ramp up the tension as the Fratelli's close in.
- Great theme which complements the puzzle solving aspects perfectly
- Immersive story driven gameplay
- Ticks a few nostalgia boxes
- Excellent experience whether coop or solo
- Fully resettable for future play throughs
- Some puzzles may be a bit easy for player too familiar with the source material
- The theme may not appeal to non-fans of the franchise
It's Good Enough, For Me
I found The Goonies: Escape With One-Eyed Willy's Rich Stuff to be a thoroughly enjoyable puzzle game experience. The theme has great appeal and getting the chance to relive the movie in a more interactive format made me feel like one of the gang. Results may vary depending on player count and their interest in The Goonies IP but regardless, this game packs in enough satisfying puzzle-solving to make up for any lack of interest in the movie or characters. All in all, a great way to spend an afternoon.
*The Goonies: Escape With One-Eyed Willy's Rich Stuff will be released in NZ soon!
