Hidden Gems - Zombie World by Magpie Games

Hey folks!  Welcome back.  This week’s hidden gem is a great little card based tabletop RPG, Zombie World. Yeah, I know, the last thing we need right now is yet another apocalypse.  But bear with me, as Zombie World has some fun thematic and design elements that are worth a look.  So gather your supplies and let’s head out to explore the dangers of Zombie World!

Zombie World is a 3-9 player card based RPG set in the aftermath of a zombie apocalypse, the game play is described as quick, easy and intense, having players fight for survival in a world long since lost to the ravages of the relentless undead. The characters here are no heroes, they’re regular people who have found themselves thrust into a life or death struggle with all the challenges that entails.  Zombies aren’t the only

The first and most notable aspect of Zombie World is the artwork, reminiscent of Robert Kirkman’s The Walking Dead graphic novel series.  The striking black, white and red colours keep the theme clear and simple, and the character designs look lifted straight from the pages of that famous franchise. But while perhaps tipping their hat to other zombie properties, the designers of Zombie World have created a roleplaying game that stands apart in what is often a bloated market of zombie clones and copycats.

The game system is based on a modified version of the Apocalypse system, used by RPGs like Apocalypse World and Monsterhearts.  Character interactions, events, and story driven narrative twists are decided by drawing cards which outline what occurs and the consequences of those events.  That doesn’t mean the entire game relies on random draws, the cards depend on decisions made by the players who are presented with story hooks and narrative choices on the cards themselves.  The game is no light-weight either.  Aimed at ages 17+ and with a play time of 2-4 hours, you can expect mature themes and a full blown RPG session for any given playthrough.

Zombie World is a great concept and a lot of game given its somewhat diminutive box size. But don’t let appearances fool you.  Zombie World is a serious, gritty experience that attempts to put players in the heads of their characters, driving the story forward at a relentless pace, barely giving players the chance to second guess their choices and this is part of what makes Zombie World work.

I hope you enjoyed this glimpse of Zombie World.  Have you had any experience with the game? If so, I’d love to hear your impressions.  Feel free to comment below or over on our Game Kings Gamers page.  See you all next time!
